Mmmm. I suspect the answer to your problem lies in the fact that not all 103mm BBs are created equal. In the bike shop where I work as a mechanic we had exactly this issue. Chainline was out on this particular bike. Calculations showed it needed a bottom bracket of a particular length to get chainline. So, old BB length, minus this amount, equals BB of N-length required, yes? So, I fitted the correct length BB only to find chainline still out. Tried different brand of BB, of the same length, and it worked fine. Go figure, as the colonials might say.
Not helpful in solving your problem I know, but it goes some way to explaining it. Messenger cranks+103mm BB=42mm chainline, usually.
