  • Hi all.

    I will speak shortly

As this "Current Project Forum" requests the topics to be more than just a photo and name of a bike, I will tell a short story about this bike (frame picture no. 1) and it's backdrop, how I got it, what were the first build-ups, the impressions, the specifications etc. etc.
I decided to put my bike here to this gallery, because I don't know how long will I ride it more, and it is also a nice piece for lo-pro fans.

I got this as a frame only (no fork) couple of years ago without knowing anything about lo-pro geometry. so the first (v. 1.0) build-up was with a 1" 700c carbon fork and white wheels with a riser bar (as I couldn't find any photos on the net of how it needed to look like). Needless to say, this could go straight to the "Anti-porn: when things go wrong" thread (sadly, I didn't keep the photo of this monster build). Taste-less and technically wrong (28" forks) build aside, it was the first time when I felt what is a really stiff track frame that I could only hear about before. Still, few weeks after the bike was split in parts.

The same year spring came, and I began searching for the right parts for it. I came across the original 650c fork with the same serial number as the frame (pretty lucky !), bought a tubular 26" front wheel and modern Profile Airwing bullhorns. As I wanted to try the new set-up badly, I builded it fastly with the parts that I had laying around - rear wheels was from my casual fixed ride, the cranks were not pista, and the color scheme was clownish. However, v. 2.0 (second picture) was much more pleasant to ride and I felt the great potential the frame had.

Don't remember why it was disassembled, but probably because of it's unmatching and strafing colorful parts. Still, the next (v. 3.0) build-up in aesthetical sense was too beefy- all-black Mavic Open-Pros clinher rims on gold high-flange hubs, white bartape, seatpost and saddle. And when I tried it on track, I understood that I will go for tubulars whatever it means necessary as clinchers are.. well.. not for this bike if I wanted to ride it properly, feeling all its qualities.

So the painstakingly long setup of the v. 4.0 began. Years later I managed to grab a lightweight front 650c wheel, found nice Ti seatpost and got the rear matching tubular rim. The only problem was to find 24h track hub. Then I ordered low flange Mack track single sided hub, which I waited for 4 months (!...).
Currently this is the setup (last pic.) which is the one I like the most, and it performs the best! :)

    So here are the details:
    Frameset:

    • Pinarello '96 pursuit pista with 650 fork (don't know if this model has a name or something) with Dura-Ace headset.

    Drive:

    • Gipiemme pista 170mm spider with Origin8 45t ring, left side is Campa Record strada crank-arm, Shimano 107mm BB, KMC chain, velosolo 16t sprocket.

    Wheels:

    • Rims are ligthweightish Wolber Profil 18 (24holes); front hub is DT Swiss, probably with Ti shell; rear hub is Mack weightweenie single-sided. Front tub is Continental Olympic and rear is worn Vittoria Nuovo Pro

    Others:

    • Ti seatpost and yellow SLR seat, Mavic bullhorns and 3ttt stem (need longer though), Eggbeater 2ti pedals (for city cruising with touring shoes).
Weight: 6.980 grams (and can go less)

...And of course, the long extended seatpost is because of my height, which is not really compatible with lo-pro geometry, but the bike buys back this with its speed and great steel riding feel.

  • Lovely frame and nice story.

  • Where did you manage to find the original fork (the bay?) ? Quite a coincidence if you ask me!

  • It is the same colour way as the pinarello track frame you had for sale. Did you come into them at the same time?

  • it's not the seatpost length, it's saddle to bar drop that's impressive, you must have some flexible back for that!
anyway, very nice way the bike has come

  • Getting more and more used to it, as it is now my only ride for everything (beater and roadie are disassembled). Responsive, fast and veeery cute, but sometimes I get afraid about running into a car or pedestrians (hypnotized by nice spring weather) without brakes.

Few bits changed - Cinelli Tempo bar (thanks Vince for that - less drop than Mavic/more comfy) and Cinelli Alter stem (I don't think it fits here, so planning to update to titanium). Weight in the pics is 7.12 kg

  • I don't really like the look off the stem on that headset. Nice bike though.

  • it rides and looks amazing !!

  • Hello unit lost!
You have good taste in bikes :)
I heard that there were about 20 frames like yours and mine made. I just got mine and started to put it together.

  • The Tempo's go well with the built!
    Good work!

  • story, brand, parts, colormatching & geo: awesome
    but that head tube...

  • Hey RossinGuy :)
Can't see your picture, can you PM me? Really interested in what you got.

Yeah, many people hate that head tube, I know :D

  • Hei!
    Sorry for flickr.

  • About headtub... it is sexy in its inperfection.....it was a bit strange for me at first, but now I love it.

  • Wow, feels really great to see the same frame (having in mind that they are quite rare) :)
As it is smaller, it looks really tight!
Are you planning to change the bars?

I changed the stem, the ITM looks better (more ascetic, colour is similar to seatpost and rims) and is 100 grams lighter than Alter and adapter set, + new Vittoria front tyre (thicker than the Continental Olympic one and is more resistant and comfortable on rougher surfaces) was glued on the rim, so I am back again on streets when the weather is dry
For today I have only crappy pic of installing new stem indoors :)

  • big improvement with the stem imo!

  • Still don't have photo from current update, but..

Here is another "project" :D - oh it's soooo good to remember childhood...:)
Found a box of Lego at my aunt's apartment, she is keeping it for her grandsons to play when they come for a visit.
.. But it was me who hijacked that box of material and gave it a new shape :)

  • I shall continue my monologue.

Thanks to Remrak, I got a Big Brother for my Pista bike.
I smell a new project. In fact, I almost got everything to test ride, just need to weld the fork steerer to make it longer, as the headtube is incredibly big.
After both bikes will be completed, they can go to matching bikes thread >>>>>

  • Lovely bikes, just wondering what size they both are? And also how that compares to the size of road frame you would typically ride?

  • Lovely.
The ultra long stem actually works beautifully

  • Magnificent! and now you have twins too :)

    Have fun,

    Matt

  • Wow, that Pinarello looks pretty painful to ride, but it´s so sweet.

  • @LaurenceCardiff:
    The bullhorns on the pina is a little bit (around 2cm) lower than the dropbars of my road;
Anyway, this Pista is too small for me anyways, so I am thinking about giving it a nice upright quill stem and risers - this will make it more maneuverable (spelled correctly?) and comfortable in the city, since I am not riding this bike more than 20km radius from my home. There are two other projects, which will fill my long distance needs - please check below (sorry, I have a really old and terrible camera):
