  • Boring story first:
My girlfriends house is about 15 miles from mine. For her birthday she asked her mom a roadbike, so she could ride to me. Her mom then asked me to build her one, she gave me 150 euro's, cause I said that I could do it for that money easily.
The theme is a bit Velo Orange -ish. So an old road frame (size 54-56) with a bit newer components.
My girlfriend is involved into this project and she really likes it, although the technical part doesn't matter to her, only the look of it.

    The real build.
I had some luck on this project right away, I bought a Peugeot Performance 5000 roadbike for only 50 euro's. The frame was 61 so far to big, even for me. So I sold the frame for 40 euro's haha.

So 10 euro's spend got me the following parts:
ITM bars and cheap Custom stem.

Some RSX levers, they didn't work first, but I read on the internet to spray some WD40 into them and now they work perfectly.

Some brakes, polished, anyone knows the type?

    300ex front and rear.

    Ofmega Linea cranks.

And the wheels, they are Airline Vuelta's, I removed the decals and then got some free NOS tires from the bikeshop where I work, they aren't identical but they do look so.

Also have this seatpost 27.0 from my Concorde. But it depends on the frame if I can use it.

Then I ordered A Brooks B17s saddle and some Fizik Honey tape. (total of about 50 euro's)

    Total costs are now 10 + 50 + 5(innertubes)= 65 euro's approx.

Still need a frame though, about size 52-54.
If I can buy this cheap we have some money left for some upgrades/cool gadgets.

    Tips and hints are welcome.
    Cheers,
    Jan

  • Hi Jan,

nice idea. If you keep an eye on the classifieds in here that kind of frame comes up quite often. With postage that might stretch your budget a little because I suspect you're not based in the UK.

  • Hi, I'm from the netherlands. So classified in here won't work, also cause on this forum people know what they can get for their stuff haha. I found a nice gazelle cm in 52. But the seller wants to wait for a week. Tommorrow I will check out an old peugeot which cost only 30 euro's.
    Cheers.

  • Just bought a Pink/purple Concorde full bike for 25 euro's!

Hope she will like it haha.

  • Concorde did great paint jobs. Let's see some pics.

  • Good stuff Jan. I think you'll find prices on here to be pretty good. You can get some bargains. Anyway good luck with the rest of it. Keep us posted.

  • the advert of the concorde showed up and I called immidiately, this is it:

    http://link.marktplaats.nl/561228176

I'm picking it up this saturday. Can't see what the type is through the picture.
Also the paint on the forks and rearstay doesn't look that well, but we'll see. 25 for a full concorde bike isn't much.

Only don't know if it will look good with honey leather parts.

  • I've got a great road bike, small frame and all
Anyone known a girlfriend that wouldn't suit it?
Any build would do, or colour, don't mind vintage just one that fits.

  • I don't understand your post.

  • "girlfriend for road bike"
    A joke.

  • Got my tape today, looks like thise will match with the brooks just fine.

  • .[/QUOTE] Some brakes, polished, anyone knows the type?

They look like early 90's Shimano barrel adjuster is a bit more glam than the exage motion - probably 105 in that case - ca. 1992

  • Well I don't think they're 105. Cause they don't have that "lever" on them.

  • good point - here are the exage motion brakes I was originally thinking of
memory's not up to much - was there anything between exage motion and 105??

  • I believe they're the ones you just posted, only a bit more polished.

  • That was my initial thought when I saw the centre nut
The exage motion sticker can be peeled off - that's what I did on mine as it looks crap.
The only thing with yours is that the barrel adjuster looks much better (hence me thinking it might be 105, but forgetting about the QR lever.

  • But the barrel adjuster can be replaced over the years easily.

I did remove the sticker from the shifters, cause the RSX stickers look really bad haha.

  • Picked up the Concorde today and it was in really bad shape. Seatpost was really stuck and reminded me of the Joe Waugh. It's out now with a lot of work. Will make some pictures tommorrow orso.

  • Paint was so bad I decided to give it a try with some rattle cans haha, here's the result:

    Needs a clearcoat though.
It isn't bad. But needs a decent respray some time in the future, or maybe just another frame.

  • That's a shame about the paint.. Sorry dude..

  • It was really bad, chips everywhere. I mailed a few paintshops to see how much it will cost me to have it painted together with something they've to paint at that time.

    Cause I still have 60 euro's.

  • one can do a professional job with rattle cans, with about 60 euros. i don't know the price of paint in nl but in britain it's just less than a tenner per can. you need buy lots of sandpaper (cheap)

sand back to undercoat or main colour, (remove laquer)
be careful not to affect decals though... leave space around edges of a gew centimeters

make sure it's a totally naked frame!!!
get hand paint for the base layers. it's a lot cheaper.
you need to apply thin coats of enamel or direct to metal paint, a big can and a brush doesn't cost much. get a good colour match, but exact doesn't matter. hand paint, (2 thin coats better than 1 thick coat) then after every 2 or 3 coats sand back with fine paper, say 180 grade or finer. you have to keep a good few centimeters away from decals for safety, but you can always mask it off. the idea is smooth and shiny, so polish if neccessary! (but wash before re painting. )
you need a smooth transition between old and new coats.

then, with auto paint, spray a few coats of exact colour match. you migh need a couple of rattle cans. Even, Smooth, Thin, Minimal (practise first)
sand with very fine paper, or maybe just polish it if you did well. get any runs out but leave your pristene coats nice.
then laquer it with the rest of your budget, sanding and polishing between coats.
leave at least 24 hours between coats, especially colour and laquer!!

you need lots of laquer, it the protecting layer. the colour is delicate and will fall off at the mere thought of metal to metal contact without and inch of laquer to protect it. ok not an inch, but you know...

    good luck...

  • Thx for the description, I allready knew all that and I'm actually prettu good with rattle cans. Just didn't take my time on this one. Will do that in the future but allready got an email from a coater who wants to do it for 50 euros. So I'll see what to do.

  • All right! Searched Marktplaats for a while and found a carpainter/restorer who is willing to paint the frameset for 25 euro's!
