James, have a go on my cross bike and see what you think- it's 50/34 and 11-32.
I've got an 11-25 and a 12-27 that I can spin on there for a proper back to back comparison- and a steep hill just outside my house.
If the 11-32 appeals then maybe look at a SRAM MTB mech with Force (or Red if you are feeling excitable) shifters.
This has the added bonus that you can try the hydraulic brakes also.
