Taiwanese wheel components on ebay

  • Has anyone bought these components before? Any idea on the quality etc? Are we assuming it's crap cos it's form Taiwan, or are we assuming they just bash out an extra 1000 in the evenings to sell on ebay and they're perfectly acceptable??? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280809254016?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2605wt_1285

I have those hubs in a small flange version. Solid budget hubs. build quality looks good, and they've lasted a year of abuse so far.

  • I have some similar ones on some cheapo ebay wheels. They do a decent enough job.

  • Only Royce will do for my beater now.

  • UTFS rohaaan.

Those are Novatec hubs and cheaper if you buy them from northern England.

They're good. Though not good enough for *m.f obvs.

  • Oh great thanks! I UdTFS by the way, couldn't find anything... Basically I saw these awesome wheels, but can't find any way to them in the UK, so thought I might try and recreate them by building my own... Rim and spoke for £35 seems like a bit of a bargain...

  • Rims weigh 764g :(

  • Yeah but... look how nice they look! Maybe DP18s are a better bet??

  • I'm probably being old and un hipster like. But I cant see the resoning behind near kilo weighing, deep section alu rims, built with loads of spokes.

Is there a new racing down concrete steps, on your fixie, with your mum on your back, sport I havent heard of?

  • Learning to build your own is a great idea rohaaan. You'll also learn a lot about what makes a good wheel!

There is some info on this forum regards calculating spoke length and Sheldon Brown's pages are great. UTFS.

    Did I mention UTFS?

Rigida DP18s are pretty good if you want 30mm of deepness. They're not ridiculously heavy (around 600g?). With Double Butted spokes and those Novatec/Rebranded hubs you should have a strong set of wheels.

    And UTFS.

  • For a 30+mm rim, I'd usually consider 28 spokes laced 2x enough for the rear, and 20 or 24 radial spokes enough for the front.

Sayin that. For an everyday beater wheelset. 32 3x is both more solid, and easier to build.

Grab everything from Planet-X, and have a bash.

  • Oh yeah, I've built a 48 spoke BMX wheel before so I'm not worried about building the thing, it's just having the right components! Sheldon has good info... I was pretty keen on doing half-radial on the back, but I'm thinking track wheels don't need much of a dish, so would probably be best to stick to a 2 cross or something. Anyway, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it... My current frame is non-butted 531, so saving a few hundred grams on wheels isn't top priority. A few hundred pounds (£) on the other hand, is probably more important. Form over function, all the way

Build a symmetrical rear. If anything have a bash at a radial front. Alougth you'll probably find 32 3x front and rear requires 64 spokes of the same length. Which will save a fair bit of money.

I have Mavic CXP33s, and lightish low flange novatech hubs. Laced with a tiwanise version of revolution spokes (heavily butted). IMHO they make a solid, stiff, and lightweight (ish) wheelset.

  • Thanks for the tips! Seems real hard to get gold rims

  • That's on aesthetic grounds, as gold components always look shit.

  • gold components always look shit.

You might be right actually. Have to have a rethink...
