Arrived at work this morning and bumped into a colleague (and also a former next door neighbor) on a new bike.
This is a guy in his early 40s who, as I say, was my neighbor for a while a few years ago. He was the first fixed gear rider I ever met (riding a baby blue pompino). We would sometimes bump into each other cycling home, and I remember scoffing at the idea of riding fixed gear up this one particular hill I climbed most days (and subsequently have no issue with riding fixed).
He also had a motorbike fetish, and last year I learned that he had had an accident. It was no fault of his own, he was simply plowed off his motorbike whilst patiently waiting to turn into his own street. As a result, he had his right leg amputated above the knee. Pretty nasty, considering his active lifestyle (cycling, motorbiking, wife and 3 kids, martial arts instructor and so on).
Anyhow, so I see him this morning, and he rocks up to work with his metal prosthetic peg leg in his backpack, pedaling away with his left leg, on a Cannondale leftie. Fucking win.
