Front brake problems?

Posted on
  • I've built a bike up and it just needs a front brake to go on there, I had a campag one which a friend gave me but unfortunately there inst enough reach and the pads are touching the tyre. He's said I need to find a front brake the has mudguard clearance? I went through my parts bin and tried all the front brakes I had lying around but none had enough reach.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can pick up a brake from or what caliper to go for. Baring in mind this is a budget build too so I dont want to be spending a fortune on a fancy brake set up.

    Cheers.

  • Tektro do some long reach road calipers, measure your reach first though to be sure.

  • alhonga - also branded as acor - do them too quite cheap - spa cycles

for pure cheapness weinman did loads of long drop center and side pull ones . before cantis people used to loaded tour with them so they're fine i'll be able to post a set for c. 7 gbp

let me know your brake drops - bolt to center of rim.........

  • Sounds like you need a standard long drop caliper, these are usually 47-57mm drop and available widely and at not great expense. You can buy a new set of Miche(F&R) for £18 posted from Wiggle in black or silver or if you just want a front there's these single Acor for £13 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acor-Dual-Pivot-Brake-Calipers-Road-Bike-Cycle-47-57mm-/110782170129?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&var=&hash=item5f78b2536b
Generally (but not always) it is only the rear brake that people need the extra long drop when fitting a 700C wheel on an older frame designed for 27" wheels
If you don't know how to measure the drop you require here's how

  • got one sorted now cheers guys :)
