  • I thought this link should go in campaigning, but decided it might be better off here.

This suggests cycle training is a core subject in the Dutch school curriculum. I wonder if its true.

  • Must be someone from Holland in the manor?
It seems like a completely common sense approach.
8 hours a year per year 5 student.
Education secretary should just advise it to every school.
In many schools that are part of Sustrans Bike It project there is this level of provision and more, starting with the youngest and embedding it into the School life
Have got written programs if people want to p.m me.

  • It is.. We get to do "verkeersexamen" in group 7 or 8 age 10-12, which is a traffic exam.. First, textbook traffic rules.. Then, ability training with courses set out on the schoolyard.. Then finally, exam on a given route, with controllers really peaking from bushes if one does all right during the route..

I never got to do it, because I got hit by a car and being stuck in a bed for 6 weeks in a casquet (right term in this? anyways, plaster from armpits to hips) because of cracks in a vertibrae.. Guess that training came a bit too late..

  • It's not the same kind of cycle training as we now have in the UK, obviously.

  • That article is rubbish, by the way.

  • They just put cycling high on the agenda at every level. What can we do with training/infrastructure/law/culture etc. to elevate cycling? Then they do the lot and properly funded!

Christ! They even have royalty poping in (on their bikes!) to deliver the certificates. Can you imagine Kate and Will crusing by to deliver the Bikability badges?

I often think that the "debate" in the UK around training/infrastructure is purely a function of the very low level of investment. The result is that we have to argue over crumbs.

  • But the money allocated isn't all spent.
Problem with bikeability is that all us lot say its great, muddle class people day its great, but between that and the bums getting on saddles there's a massive lethargy in the mainly demotivated Council staff and office staff in schools that organise it.
Gove or a minister need to get it elevated in every single headteachers priorities to an essential life skill, as important as sitting sats tests.
Is that likely when for example swimming isn't taught in every school?probably not because this government are more concerned about turning schools like everything into commercial operations over and above learning institutions

  • Word!

It is. But it's not like you can't ride your bike when you fail the test... I think it's a nice way to educate children on road safety and everything, although at the age i took this test i already knew the rules because i've had been cycling for 4 years (and like most children, had a teacher that was more concerned with me knowing the rules than my cycle-training-teacher: a mother).

  • I rather like the idea of being able to swim and ride a bike as being a KPI for a school ; with the achievement of each being celebrated.

Mind you, I dread to think how this would emerge once it had gone through the Oftsted mangle

Of course , what I mean is that every child should have the opportunity to be able to do this . All of mine have.

The Elf and safety cunts would go mental with that...

Swimming and bikes ? fuck me mega dangerous.
