No, just Bikes the Business with their silly (actually quite fun) cargo bikes.
Don't think there's really any need for despatch type couriers? But these food delivery type outfits are working in US cities so who knows. It would be nice to see more eco-friendly deliveries in Brighton.

I will admit they do look like fun! I guess your right, Brighton is quite small with no central business area as such so the need isn't really great enough.
To be honest with fuel prices rising as quick as they are I wouldn't imagine its too long until more things like that start to happen over here. I think the reality of the fossil fuel powered car not being sustainable is finally starting to hit home.

Forgot to mention the hills. They pretty much kill 2 wheeled delivery transport.
One of the couriers once had to cycle the motor-assisted orange cargo bike up Coombe road. After the battery died. Hills cost double.

I can see why they are a problem with those big heavy cargo bikes but I've never had a major problem with hills carrying heavy loads regularly. I live in a pretty hilly area and quite often carry heavy loads riding fixed+brakeless and a fairly heavy gear with no real issues, yeah it can be tiring but I think if your fit enough then it isn't an issue. SF is more hilly than Brighton, I've seen videos of those guys lugging hefty loads.

I'd love to work in Brighton, getting bored of Birmingham's streets
Someone start a messenger service and hire me -

I think a courier only service would struggle because the business community in Brighton is pretty small as is Brighton.
Maybe if general deliveries such as groceries, booze, takeaways etc were offered as well then maybe such a service would work.
Would be nice to see someone have a crack at it!

I agree Brightons business sector is quite small but I definitely think what you suggest could work! It's easy enough to get from one side of brighton to the other, during rush hour its 10x quicker on a bike. I'd go out of my way to order a takeaway if I knew it was being delivered by bike.
With the right amount of promotion and a small outfit to begin with no reason why it isn't possible.
I think the question is now who's got the balls to start something hah!

Courier bag + takeaway = stink :)

Nothing to do with balls, you need a solid business plan, some decent marketing, a variety of potential clients and some money to pay for it all.
Anyone with half a brain can make it happen - making it work and flourish is an entirely different thing!!
Go for it!!!

Are you working as a courier in London now Tenderloin? I see your no longer brighton based
-
• #15
i thought of it but brighton is a bit small and internal packages arrant send so much ... most company's work it them self... :(

I think there is potential for it, there's a lot of architect firms based in and around brighton & hove and they are always having items run to printers or solicitors etc. If someone was willing to find the clients and gain their confidence I think it could be a good venture. As mentioned before offering to carry take away etc wouldn't be a bad idea either, on a busy friday night with taxis and drunks clogging the roads using a car to deliver would take a while.

^Stop talking about it and do it then :) as Guzzi said, write up a business plan, go find some clients. Nothing will happen unless you make it happen.
Talk to Old Man Bill, he's been working in this industry longer than anyone and will know his stuff. Research small business loans repayment terms etc.
Sounds like you really have an interest in this, if thats true then make a difference and do it, whats stopping you? :)

I do genuinely have an interest but I'm moving to southampton in september to finish my degree, maybe after :)

I might steal your idea then, i've been looking for a small business venture. i.e. create my own startup and see what happens

hi folks,my first post on lfgss - so excuse if i miss on protocols - the possibilities of running a freight courer service in brighton are endless, and combining it with already exisiting services would be a way in ...
Is there any in Brighton? A bit of a random question, I've been told there is some in Brighton but I've never seen any. I know there is that company that use those silly cargo bikes carrying brochures etc but is there any messengers as such? I would have though Brighton would have been the ideal place being very eco conscious and a fair amount of architect firms being located in and around Brighton.
Rather pointless but I was curious, there is so many cyclists in Brighton but there seems to be little going on.
