Ideas for bike parking at work

  • I had a meeting with our Facilities Manager this afternoon and to discuss how to improve the garage for bike parking. I need to find out the following:

Bike racks: does anyone know of good bike racks that are better than the 'put your wheel' in ones that we currently have. We do not want to lose bike parking space though so space is important. We have space for 70 bikes.

Bike tags: we want to discourage people using the garage as storage for the bikes that they never use. Some people just dump their bikes for months. Two children's bikes appeared in June last year in my favourite parking spot and haven't moved since. So we are thinking of a kind of tag to identify the owner. Do you have the same issues.

I want to know all your work garage secrets.

  • we had the same issue with dumped bikes, think it's hard to get away from. We were a whole building on say 10 parking spots so you had to get in early to park your bike at all. That said, there were constantly 3-4 bikes there that were rusting away

  • Am also interested in the answers you get for this - we've got space for just over 30 bikes at work, but 10 or so are a permenant home to a variety of dumped/abandoned/forgotten bikes (8 or 9 of which have been unmoved for a year or longer)

  • Fenella's work put a note on every bike in the secure bike store saying that all bikes had to be identified to the premises management by their owners, and that any bikes that were not identified or that never moved would be removed and auctioned for charity.

    Did the job.

  • I know there is bike racks that accommodates two levels of bikes, that however means a lot of bumping and scratching so you can't park a nice bike there, since next guy will shove in with a rusty beater scratching the fuck out of your beauty

  • since next guy will shove in with a rusty beater scratching the fuck out of your beauty

This is why I've stop ed going to swinger parties.

they seem fine, I had a £14k Moulton in one of these at the Cycle-Works stand at the bikeshow for photos

    • the ones by Liverpool St station were supplied by Cycle-Works and seem good[tm].
(I have their number Vee Vee if you ping me)
  • Bumping this thread rather than starting a new one.

We've just been told we can't keep bikes in the kitchen at work. I only keep mine there because we got told we couldn't leave them under the stairs. I work in a multi storey block with different companies on each floor.

Our options now are finding a place in the actual office where a parked bike won't get in the way (not easy) or leaving them in the basement or outside.

The basement is a PITA to get to as you have to walk down two flights of stairs to get there and I'm not leaving my bike outside 30 seconds from Trafalgar Square, even if it is a beat up old thing.

Basically, do I have any right to demand secure bike parking, given that we're on the Cycle to Work scheme or am I going to have to lug my bike up and down stairs?

  • i'd be happy to lug my bike up and down a few flights of stairs a day
sadly no space in the office and i have to park on the street
grab what you can i say
it might be a schlep up some stairs but better than the alternative

  • The basement sounds ideal. what are you moaning about?

  • this ^

" two whole flights of stairs "

  • I'm just a bit pissed off that people have complained about bikes being "unpleasant" to have in the kitchen. Because they're not willing to share some space with a bike I'm inconvenienced.

I'm just sick of the "you can't leave your bike here" mentality under the bullshit excuse of H+S.

  • how big's the kitchen?

I don't mind having my bikes in my kitchen, as it's my bike and my kitchen. Not sure i'd appreciate others bikes in a shared kitchen though

  • It's big. Big enough for two dining tables with chairs and formerly a sofa, which has now gone, leaving enough space for about 3 bikes.

The writing's on the wall anyway, looks like we're not going to get very far fighting it.

  • I wouldn't want your dogshit splattered bike next to my prawn sandwich thanks.

    Into the basement with you.

  • I'll make a sign for it which says "Please do not rub your food on the tyres of this bike."

    Sorted

  • I should probably alert people to the fact that their food might be literally inches away form DANGEROUS OUTSIDE GERMS that might have attached to the soles of their shoes as well.

  • I'd be happy to keep my bike in the basement.

  • Yes, yes. We get the point. I'm spoilt and shouldn't complain. Lesson learnt etc., etc.

  • if there are a majority of bike riders where you work then screw h&s and leave your bikes where you want
if in the minority then democracy has to be seen to be working

  • is your real face as cute as the puppy over there <= if yes get it to work

i read each of your posts as though the puppy dog was typing and i for one was all for you parking your bike in the kitchen or whereever the hell you want to put it
just don't look at me in that sad way

  • at my old firm,

we had to risk leaving our bikes in an underground car park, two storeys down, not very secure, and no bike rack or sensible space to leave it for 8 hours.. none of the partners/principle directors at work appreciated the fact that more people are commuting on two wheels.. as cyclists we were treated like parasites padlocking everywhere

tis very different where i have been for the past two years.. dedicated bike store, showers, lockers, drying room.. we even have tools and a track pump ffs

    interesting story, no?
