Utterly gobsmacked by the speed of this. Time to see where my Paganini cd is I think...

If you didn't go last night then you missed this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01385d4/BBC_Proms_2011_Prom_44_Shostakovich/
Highlight of the season so far, along with the Verdi.
Lisa Batiashvili was gob-smackingly brilliant.
The rest of it was 5 star stuff as well.

good call.
Messiaen is my current favourite
YouTube - Messiaen - Quatuor pour la fin du temps - I. Liturgie de cristal, Kymia Kermani, clarinet
One of my absolute favourites. Especially when you look into where and how the piece was written.

Just finally got round to watching my recording from Sky Arts HD from weeks ago... The Firebird, played by the San Fransisco Symphony..... Performance of a lifetime. I've seen a few renditions of it but this blows them all out of the water.
I'll go as far as saying it was flawless - one to keep on my sky box I think...

Who was conducting?

Michael Tilson Thomas. What a character...
The program had 2 of my favourite pieces back to back actually which made it even better. Firebird, followed by The Rites of Spring - Not sure if it was because of his direction or what.. but the finale to "The Sacrifice" was absolutely electric.

Anyone planning to attend one of Anthony Hewitt's concerts on his Land's End John o' Groats bid? http://www.olympianist.com/ Massive challenge. The nearest he comes to London is Guildford on the way back.

Just watched the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 in B minor.....
What an incredible piece of music. I thought I'd heard most of his best works but there's obviously some big gaps in my knowledge there!

i dig a lot of 20th century composers. the royal concert hall in glasgow had a great minimal series on recently, with pieces by riley and stockhausen performed. anyway, here's a couple of favourites:

Thought someone in this thread might be able to ID this ... a lieder perhaps?

Saw this woman at the Royal Albert hall a few weeks ago. Slightly on the cheesy side, presentation-wise, but technically brilliant:

I don't always ride with one earphone in ... but when I do it's because I'm listening to Eugen Cicero...

Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 7: II. Adagio {1/3} - YouTube
Had this as a wagner tuba excerpt for an exam last week, and got a bit obsessed with this symphony, but especially this movement.

More Eugen, and not strictly classical but jazz interpretations of some of the classical masterpieces. Simply incredible skill with changes in tempo, major to minor to major key changes at will, and all more-or-less at will.

One of the funniest* things I saw at music college was a bassist trip on the stairs and land inside their bass. An "oh shit" moment like no other.
*not funny

This performance seems to divide opinions quite a bit, I personally enjoyed a lot, including the "slow" tempi, probably because I'm not a purist or a musician for that matter.
