Trying to fit 26mm bars into a Cinelli 26.4mm stem - is there a shim that fits?

    Thx

  • beer can, or just tighten the stem 0.4mm isn't much

  • tin can

  • argh! murtle, you are quicker than you look.

  • sometimes buddy :)

  • beer can, or just tighten the stem 0.4mm isn't much

    +1

  • I used a tin of stella and cut the logo out with scissors, looks mint

  • i found that if you cut a strip of tin can out then roll it up and put in stem is easier that wrapping it round bar then trying to put bar and shim into stem together.

  • Would the same thing apply to steel 25mm bars in a 25.4mm stem? I've tried the strip of can and used a long allen key and it just doesn't seem to grip enough...tends to slip about 10 degrees over the course of a week. I couldn't get sufficient grip without the can either. Nice set of bars so would rather keep them...

    Cheers

  • I have installed my Soma drops (26mm) in a new 'old stock' Cinelli XA stem (26.4mm) using a shim I made from plate brass. It's perfect, and due to the 'trial and error' nature of the experiment I now have spare brass in 0.25mm, 0.3mm and 0.4mm.

  • 25.4mm to 25.8mm seatpost shim cut to size

  • 25.8 to 26 is my issue.

Where is a good place to get cuttable metal in varying thickness? eg brass above

What is best for a bodge - tin can, beer can, alumnium foil baking tray? What is the best style for a bodge?

Using a roll of beer can or tin can I have still got slippage. Is it better to do 180 degrees of roll, and fold back on itself as many times of necessary, and do twice, to get two no. u-shape shims as opposed to one shim that goes all around the bars? Is it worth roughening up the material used to minimise slippage?

  • Generally I'd still like questions above answered.

But my immediate problem is solved. I was trying to shim a 25.8 mm bar to a 26.4 stem - seems fine with no shim now I have used a 26.0mm stem.

I need to have a strong word with the sneaky old geezer at Ripley Jumble who flogged me a 26.4mm cineli stem in a 26.0mm cinelli stem box.

  • You can buy brass shim stock on ebay. I made my own 25.4mm to 26mm shim from 0.3mm brass.
