A guy I know in Birmingham gets on and off by standing on the chainstay then stepping up onto the pedal, but it would be easier if you have a dedicated step fitted like on this one:
The guy rides it for our critical mass so when he gets to traffic lights there's usually a few handy heads around to use for balance
