Dififcult to tell if its height relative to the chainrings is part of the problem - it could be too high or too low.
Outer plate should end up clearing the large ring by a few mill and no more. Really need a pic from the side.
Worth saying that in the past I've brought plates closer together to improve shifting. As long as there's no chain rub when you're in reasonably crossed gears (it's probably inevitable in 53/25 and 39/12) you haven't closed the gap too much.
