Thanks - I've had a play around with the angle of the mech and it's working a bit better now. Still seems too 'wide' a gap, but i can now get most of the range out of the cassette in both chainrings without the chain dropping.
Can't tighten the L screw any further without serious chain rub while in 39-25. The width of the gap means that although this is as far across as the mech can reliably sit, there's a bit of a gap when in the outside position, so shifting from 39-53 when in the bigger sprockets of the cassette is a bit iffy, but manageable and the thing I wanted to avoid is losing the chain.
Seconded the recommendation on Parktool - when I came unstuck they were my first port of call (sorry lfgss!)
