also, I think if you're having to stay in friends' spare rooms and on sofas and the like, you're homeless. you may not be sleeping in doorways, but you still have no stability/privacy/security and nowhere to put your stuff.

I do appreciate that. Its not nice.

Personally, if I had a choice between a flat/room of my own that didn't meet all of my requirements and worrying about being homeless I'd choose the former.

I'm bitterly cynical about this from personal experience so I apologise for being a dick. For all I know, there may be no rental properties available at the moment.
