  • 30 notes for a chicken is above what i would pay but can see the idea that if you get more than one meal out of it could be worth it for a treat.

  • Both, really. The group that is running it now is way more hardline than those of us that started it (well, that isn't entirely true, but as someone who basically lived in the kitchen for the first two years I can say that quite a few of us were vegan, but didn't feel the need to be dicks about it).

I don't know them well, only met them a few times, but I liked all the volunteers I met. I'm actually planning to volunteer for a bit later in the year, and I guess I'll see for myself.

I guess the problem is that it was, and will always be, a multi-headed monster who attempts to function as both a restaurant and a political entity. It doesn't work.

I'm sure it could do if it attracted good professional staff; as a volunteer co-op it's much harder to run it as a restaurant. Pumpkin's was much more predictable, consistent food, if a little basic and stodgy, but washed down with cake and ice cream made for a great meal every time--just remember the quantities ... 'it's vegan, but with a vegetarian option'. :)

  • I need to start buying whole chickens again.

Read this the other day - shall have to dig out a good source:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/features/home-to-roast-are-designer-chickens-worth-the-money-2246423.html

The bit that caught my eye was HFW's quote:

I always buy whole chicken, poach or roast then make stock. Always have, always will.

I'm kind of conflicted about the whole animal welfare vs requirement to produce cheap food thing tho. I understand it's better to educate people to use less meat and have less cheap processed food but how realistic is it? *really? *

Isn't a lot of this organic, back to basics things idealistic for the privelidged few and ignoring the true economic situiation for the majority of a growing population. I hate feeling like a smug middle class wanker disapproving of the desperate mother on income support trying to get protein into a hungry family on coupons and spare change... i'm not unsympathetic.

Personally, as some one who does care about where my food comes from and how it's cooked I'd be totally happy for there only to be organic freerange meat, for all animals to live better lives, for my meat to taste better and to be more expensive so that I ate it less. I'd be totally fine and dandy with that situation.

But i'm not thinking about me here. The reality is that cheap, mass produced, processed meat products exist to fill a demand and i'm not sure any number of HFW articles is going to change that.

Maybe that's defeatist but, I can't bring myself to just jump on board with the idealists on this one.

  • god i've just bored myself. have we had this debate already? probably. feel free to ignore. i'm going back to work now.

  • How sfw is that?

  • Well it's not scat porn if you're worried. But there is a picture of a scientist holding up a burger made from protein extracted from human shit.

  • ...SOON...

  • You can do one, 'n all.

That was sold out within bloody seconds.

Made plans to do some location scouting down in Dungeness.

Thanks though. You're 50 percent redeemed. Khoo on the other hand. Unforgiveable.

Go and pester the football thread.

  • Pisti

I was practically shitting pate for days.

  • Should we have a forum rib off?

Decide on a day and all bring our best ribs/pulled pork to a park and have a forum picnic/ meat fest?

  • Who the fuck is this cunt?! It ain't Tony that's for sure.

It's Tony after too many Frosties. Clearly. He'll be on Jeremy Kyle next explaining where it all went wrong.

    She ain't all that

You would. You know you would.

Have you got a story about her?

Do it sometime mid/late June and I'm there.
    (unless I'm needed in Devon)

  • I can only assume it's because I've visited their site before, but when I type in 'hot' for hotmail into my url bar and hit enter before the hotmail drop-down loads I of course see google search results for 'hot'. What amuses me is that, for me at least, Big Apple Hotdog is the second result :)

  • soup and sausage rolls for lunch, both home made, i'm going to munch them and be grumps

  • You have reminded me that i have the certificate left over from Xmas that I need to book. I had been considering the pork course, but the sausage making is really tempting. And hey, sausages.

I bought a voucher for MOC for his birthday - maybe you can be butchery buddies - he's undecided on which one he's gonna go on, but I have a feeling it may be pork.
