With a crit you spend alot of energy accelerating out of corners that you have either freewheeled or soft-pedalled through so although average for me was pretty much bang on threshold for an hour, I spent 20 mins @ >150% + 20 mins at 50% or less + 20 mins at or about threshold.
Crit training is doing lots of very short hard efforts of 10-20 seconds with equal recovery in between to mimic the very spiky efforts of the race. I've done them round Regents Park and your average speed can end up faster than doing steady constant laps.
