London to Portsmouth / East Wittering, ever done it?

I used this thread to put my own London to Portsmouth route together so cheers everyone.

A few notes:
It isn't the nicest ride, this was a dry run for getting the ferry in the summer rather than a recreational. I avoided a few hills by going through built-up areas instead; I'll be going slowly and with camping kit next time.
I added about 10km on to the route to avoid the A3 and other dual carriageways where I could, the B2070 at Petersfield was probably the worst bit for fast traffic but I never felt unsafe.
Drivers in Portsmouth aren't very cyclist-aware and all the other cyclists we saw stuck to the pavements. There does seem to be a reasonable cycle path network to avoid the busier roads that I'm going to look into.
Lunch stop at the Pride of the Valley pub before Liphook - food was cracking.

Urgh - it seem google re-routed all my suggestions, mostly onto the A3... I've added some more points to fix them now.

My favourite route out of London in this direction is still firmly Richmond Park, Kingston, Portsmouth road to Cobham, East Horsley, Shere. I admit i've not done it fixed yet, but going south across the North Downs isn't too hilly - just make sure you have good brakes for the descent to Shere. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5421311

Hey, Living in Southsea currently. Not sure I agree with the first bit, I cycle daily around Portsmouth and find 99% of drivers are actually pretty good, leave decent space etc (Not all though obv). Loads of cyclists do cycle on the pavement, we seem to have a very large £99 halfords bike population.

If you need any help with cycle paths let me know. If you come down Portsdown hill by QA hospital, you can pick up an off the road path all they way down to the ferry port and beyond, cutting along the waterside by the Mountbatten centre etc etc.

OpenStreetMap is pretty good at cycle paths.

Two friends and I completed this for the first time today on my fixed (only) bike today. I just wanted to compare times with other riders who have done it.

Our route was roughly 85-90 miles (a few unexpected detours, and we live between Portsmouth and Southampton) and we worked out our time in the saddle as roughly 5h 30min

Having never ridden more than probably 15 miles before so I didn't think this was too bad.

Fast group would be 19-20mph average (or is that just 6pt?)

Not bad for a first big ride then!

the start of my french trip last summer was the ride down to portsmouth out of london via chichester set of about 11.30 got there about sun down in august 94.8 miles time 7hrs 06min taken from my cat eye which i think is pretty close. beautiful roads all around goodwood and the road from the a3 that goes down to a272 petersfield / midhurst ish i think great journey nice pub lunch and a pint or two

and my effort, packed down rucksac on back pub lunch later than planned start
