  • Thread dredge. Anyone used City Powder Coating lately? Tempted to buy a cheap frame I'm watching on ebay, and would want to get it stripped/sorted.

What's the process, drop it off and collect it the following week? Do you just give them a RAL colour ref or something? They say on their website to mask things off before turning up. I have no idea how to mask stuff if it's being baked in an oven! Or indeed, what to mask (assuming BB threads, headset, any other threads) Any tips?

  • in my experience, city powder coaters is cheaper than bournes but a lot less reliable. Bournes do the masking themselves, just strip all the parts from it.

  • Just reading this thread about City fucking up some guys frame, though he didn't mask it he did at least talk to them about masking and they said they'd do it (they didn't)...

  • I heard of people leaving an old bottom bracket in place to block off the BB shell

  • to quite a guy on stw:

    Bournes in Brum.
Paint striper in threads, head tube and seat tube when you get it back.
    Spare cash in your pocket.
    Job done.

  • Bournes always said they would mask stuff for me, but frames always came back with the threads coated. I just used some nitromors, fresh powder coat seems to some off real easy.

  • If in doubt, mask it out.......yourself.

I'm going fluro pink with my next frame!

What about rims? I have some campag ones that I need to paint, anything I need to do with them or just take them down?

  • Just take them down. Sometimes when they blast fragile aluminium parts, they get chipped. With old well used rims this is likely.
