Might one of these work?
Wiggle | BBB BHP-20/21 Stem Extender Stems
I have a similar problem with a Raleigh Twenty i want to convert to threadless because the headtube is so low down and the handlebars need to be so high. Still not sure it'll work that well for me but it might be an ok idea for you.

As long as it comes to the top of the headset I don't see a problem... the converter will add a bit of weight on though which is a pity not life threatening!

I remember reading that Sheldon did that

For my Hip-Shop Sled I have an Ahead quill converter, to a length of 28.6mm diameter 501 downtube, which is clamped with an dismembered ahead stem [jubilee clip is just for tests] + one coke can shim. I have put about 60 odd miles on it so far including finchley to chiswick. Its a bit flexy but I have not busted it yet and I am about 600000 stone. not the same mod as you are asking about but just to show that the converter combo works for me. -

Whoa! Cheers for the awesome replies guys! fatoldbloke that looks incredibly foolish which gives me hope :) Just going to be a beater (which is why I preferred this option to just buying a proper fork) so hopefully wont need to be super solid (just enough to get me to shops and back :)
Bothwell your link looks perfect! Though I will probably just try a DIY version with a quill converter and some spacers.
As I pointed out in the first post the tightening will be the tricky bit though I was thinking that if the quill converter and the star nut have the same threading I could possibly just connect the two?? Seem to recall most quill converters having a larger bolt though so will have to have a look....

could always thread the top of your forks and fit a 1 1/8th threaded hedset if you are going for the quill stem
So I have just bought a 1-1/8 fork that is exactly the wrong size for my frame and comes just to the top of the headset....I was wondering if I could just punch the star nut down the tube further and then put a quill-ahead converter in to attach a normal ahead stem....I am aware that the issue will be getting it tight enough in a up/down orientation (the normal job of the top cap and screw), but wonder if anyone else (who is still alive, preferably) has ever been silly enough to do this??
Cheers!
