Is there any power near there? Arc sounds like what you need.
The pieces don't need to be clamped to be welded, earth would be clamped to the one and then the other will just need to be held until you've got it tacked in place. Then you can let go and weld it properly.

oh really, that sounds good. yeah, might have a generator on site for other stuff. will speak to the bod potentially actually doing it, thankfully not me.
