There is a campsite open at Kingston which is pretty close, would be a nice easy ride in to brighton uni (its less than 5 miles and I think there might be a cycle path on that road now)

There are trains from Lewes to Falmer station (which is by Brighton Uni) as well if your feeling lazy.
Its easy enough to wild camp on the downland, but there isn't a lot of shelter or water and it would be a little way till you get up past the farmland to somewhere secluded.
