Looks like a Shimano splined tool, or Campag of the same type. If it doesn't have the measurements on it you need to measure the length of the axle and the width of the BB shell (the tube it fits into). 70mm wide and it's an Italian BB, 68mm and it's British.
Regarding removal, the left and right cups are not one piece and turn different ways so they come out independently. Check your BB shell width, it'll tell you which way to turn to loosen. If it's a Shimano BB that ebay tool will do the job.

Yeah, looks like a Shimano tool to me too. If you're replacing the BB take it into the shop as they will be able to tell the type of BB you need. Differences in size, thread pitch etc.

hey man thanks for the quick reply, the shell is 68, whereas overall length i would say is around 114?

thanks for the reply bruce...
As for a replacement.... im just wanting a new single crankset is it therefore better to get a new crankset and then find the BB to match..... or the other way around? ie getting a BB first then finding a crankset to match ?

Well, usually you care much more about the features of the cranks (what they look like, what BCD, crank length etc) than the BB. All the BB has to do is fit in your bike, offer the correct chainline and go round without failing. So choose your cranks, then find a decent quality BB that will combine with the cranks to give you the desired chainline.
On that note, it isn't always easy to find out in advance which BB size works best with a particular crankset to give proper track chainline (if that's what you're after). The Velodrome Shop is one useful resource that does list that information with their chainsets.

Drive side is reverse thread (clockwise to undo), non-drive side is normal thread (anticlockwise to undo). It's worth taking a lot of care removing the BB. The tool can easily slip out of the splines and start stripping them - and it gets progressively harder to engage them and apply rotational force. Sometimes a long axle bolt can be inserted through the tool and into the axle to keep the tool in place (kinda depends on the width of the tool and its hole, so no guarantees that'll work).

Just meant they could tell you what BB this is, there are some slight differences, then you can fit the BB yourself. It's what I did with both of mine; take them out and take them into the shop when I got the new ones.
Hey all just wondering if anyone could just confirm what tool it is i need to take my BB out?
Also once iv got it out will it have the measurements etc on it so i can get a replacement?
