You must be doing it wrong.
I rode my (modern) £300 giant hybrid everyday as my main mode of transport from early '07 - mid '09.
The only problem I had was a bit of squeaking from one of the pedals that I knocked. There were some good parts, but it was hardly high end. Modern sealed stuff is great, and it's cheap.
