I used to roll my own, but I got sick of there always being one component that turned out to be a stupid choice for some reason or another. Usually the motherboard. Like David I realised I would rather just spend the extra money to make it someone elses problem.
So when I wanted a new music production PC I went to Inta-Audio and had them build me one http://www.inta-audio.com/computer-music-c36/music-pcs-c37/inta-audio-intel-i7-extreme-music-pc-p3597
Mine's older (and therefore lower spec) than this but it's in that same nice Silverstone case with the silly fan controller on it. The benefit of this is that they have far more experience in what are the most rock-solid reliable, powerful and quiet-running components to use. And it has been utterly dependable.

When I wanted a new gaming rig I just bought a nice gaming laptop from Novatech, because it was a good price and the reviews were positive.
