Use oil in freewheels, not grease. Personally, I'd leave it as it is for now, and I'd shove in some heavy oil when the weather starts getting crappy in the late autumn.

I've had one of these for 4 years and have done nothing to it, still works fine. And as I could play Stairway to Heaven when I was 12, and Jimmy Page didn't actually write it till he was 22, I think you'll have agree I know what I'm talking about...

cheers, mines only (!) lasted about 2 years, with a fair bit of off road and CX use so time for replace.
good idea, heavy oil. I've also since seen that you can soak in a bath of car gear oil so may try that in due course. -

^^^ If you get a sticky one, and its not dismantle'able then dump it for 1-3days in a tub of diesel, that'll clean anything out. Then clean & degrease as best you can before packing with fresh heavy weight oil, gearbox oil is a good call, the stuff stinks so don't get it on your hands or you'll be sniffing it for days to come lol!
hello.
getting myself a new one of these for the commuter:
shimano sf mx30
question is, shall I open bearing cover and pack with more grease or leave as is?
I know some say this is a good thing to do with cartridge bearings, but these are free balls.
would grease help, or just contribute to general accumulation of cack stopping the pawls from engaging properly??
would be good to hear some views, knowledge.
Thanks in advance!
