  • finished the last bit of need to talk about kevin today, only to realise that today, 8th April, is the anniversary of Thursday. Kev'll be 29 on Wednesday, and out for 6 years.

  • Just started to read Jarhead by Anthony Swofford

Amazon.com: Jarhead : A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles (9780743235358): Anthony Swofford: Books

So far, 75 pages in, it's great! It's an interesting mixture of fragile emotions and war fuelled hardness. His writing is great, been a while since I read something having it's own language like this does. Really look forward to the rest of it

just finished it. A great read, really enjoyed it. The film is surprisingly true to the book, so if you enjoyed that, get reading

and if you didn't, it's worth a read anyway, it's interesting to get a peek in to the life and thoughts of a marine. Especially one that's intelligent enough to go nuts in the desert whilst making enough mental notes to write a book about it

  • Watched Equilibrium last night - bloody brilliant film.

Afterwards I was left wondering if It's based on a book - searched online and I don't think it is.

Anyway this led me on a search for books like this, V for vendetta and 1984 stuck out, so I've brought them not ever reading 1984 I feel like I'm in for a treat.

Anything else along the lines of these kind of books I'd enjoy?

  • Brave New World

  • Canticle For Leibowitz?
    The Chrysalids?
    The Sheep Look Up?
    Stand On Zanzibar?
    Not Wanted On The Voyage?

Sorry, don't even know what that film is about, but these recommendations all touch on dystopian futures. All great books IMO. Maybe Chrysalids hasn't held up as well as the others.

  • Thats the phrase I was looking for dystopian future

Equilibrium is basically 1984 spliced with the matrix. 1984 is a must read and watch the movie too. Both the book and film aren't as 'sexy' as more modern adaptations but you cant beat the originals. I have a lot of love 1984 as it was the first book I read outside of books we were forced to read at school, comics and skateboard magazines. Ever since reading it I haven't not had a book on the go. Hope you enjoy it.

    On a different note...
I have just read Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall. Amazing! read it!

  • Awesome - I've got 1984 at home on the mac. I'll put it on the kindle once I get in tonight and get an early night in!

This. Massively. But it is awesome.

Also 1984 is by far my favourite book.

  • The Chrysalids

Is this a film? I love the book.

  • If It's 1984 sliced with the matrix then I look forward to reading it. Haven't got it on my kindle at the moment so that's an hour wasted on the bus home tonight, ha!

  • The Lacuna
    Barbara kingsolver.
Enjoying it a lot so far. It helps that I've traveled in Mexico and visited most of the places mentioned.

Just read Number 9 dream by David Mitchel which is a great piece of writing but ultimately a bit 'so what'? all form and no substance.

    Gave up on 1Q84.

  • Watched Equilibrium last night - bloody brilliant film.

Love that film, mr Bale at his finest. And from that on, he's just done better and better heros. And what can top playing batman? Perhaps that blue chap from Watchmen, but not really

  • Is this a film? I love the book.

    IMDB says no.

Yep I've really warmed to him from watching a few of his films recently. Very impressed with The Machinist too.

Started reading 1984 too last night. Fell asleep reading it but so far I'm impressed, the level of detail is great. If the weather stays as it is I'm going to sit in the park for lunch and read.

it's a terribly written book in many ways, certainly the most inept of all the novels of his that I've read, but the ideas contained within it are just absolutely untouchable. Man is a god.

Would recommend Triffids by Wyndham too (indeed anything by Wyndham is a must-read imo), nicely dystopia in a post-apocalyptic way.

  • Does anyone know this book? It's about some guy, and he has to chase these robots, only they don't look like robots? It was made into a film? It's doing my head in...

  • ah, I know the one you mean but I dont read fiction anymore.
    something about androids I think

On Steve Peters Chimp Paradox, works for Vickie works for me

Assuming this isn't some savage triple-neg ironic hipster thing, you're thinking of Do Androids Dream of Eelectric Sheep by Philip K Dick, and the film is Blade Runner. Though the book is, I'm sorry, utter gash - more like light hearted sci fi farce than retrofuturistic noir.

  • the rats trilogy, first read them 30 years ago.
    still great!

  • I may be very late jumping on a bandwagon, but I've just discovered Nick Harkaway.

He sure as hell can tell a story. Not really surprising, seeing as he is apparently the son of a certain Mr Le Carre...

Anyway, "The Gone-Away World" and "Angelmaker", cracking reads.

  • I got introduced to Bukowski last year, only read 2 books so far but loved it.

  • Battle for the Abyss

The story of a small contingent of Imperial Astartes led by Ultramarine Captain Cestus who catches the Word Bearers, a traitor legion, in the act of being traitors. Stranded in deep space with no time to warn his legion or Terra, what will he do?

  • just read the first story on the tube this morning funny nicely written and a twist in the tale ... i never expected that
