For my Hip-Shop Sled I have an Ahead quill converter, to a length of 28.6mm diameter 501 downtube, which is clamped with an dismembered ahead stem [jubilee clip is just for tests] + one coke can shim. I have put about 60 odd miles on it so far including finchley to chiswick. Its a bit flexy but I have not busted it yet and I am about 600000 stone. not the same mod as you are asking about but just to show that the converter combo works for me.
