Weinmann +Quando Vs. Realigh +Mach 1

  • Need to rebuild after everything but the frame and chainset was nicked 2 weeks ago. Very upsetting, my first build, and some prick tore it apart...
    details: http://www.lfgss.com/thread58736.html

I had a Raleigh wheelset: "RGR957 & RGH957" Front + Rear, track hub nutted, Mach 1 Omega black rims. I was thinking to get the same again, they where cheep & I don't want to spend much more only to have it nicked again.

I liked the rims as they where very light, I am not sure about the hubs. I wrecked the thread on the rear hub. Lockring was not tight enough when I started riding & I felt something slipping several times, but did not know what was wrong.

Buy the time I learned what the problem was, it was two late, the damage was done. I tightened it up properly a couple of times, but it would come louse after a week or two, and I could see the damage to the threads.

I would think this is more my fault than the fault of the hub.

Looking for a budget wheelset I found "WEINMANN DP18" with Quando hubs for £75.

Can anybody give an opinion on these hubs & the rims. The rims look like the would be more heavy, as they are deeper than my old ones.

But deeper seems to be the popular choice, maybe you could explain why?

  • Sounds a very sad story. I hope you get your ride up and running soon bro

  • Go fir it, the DP18 isn't exactly a lightweight wheel, but it's a good price for such wheelset.

  • They are a good solid set of wheels, if a little weighty depending on your needs !?

Quando hubs appear to have nice alloy, but you can count on the bearings needing a proper clean and lube before use. The ones that I have played with (mostly by axle spinning in shops, but owned a couple of pairs too) have been very gritty inside.

If I were you I'd try for a set of wheels with sealed bearing hubs, which you could probably get for a few quid extra.

  • depending on your needs !?

    Is this difficult?

    Thanks..

Not difficult at all. it just takes a few narrow spanners, a bit of grease, an old rag and a bit of patience. here is your how to:

there is also a couple of video tutos on youtube

Thanks for that, I have ordered that wheelset. Will see how it works out after delivery.

  • I am convinced you'll be alright with that. Ride in good health :-)

  • Seamus, I'm currently looking at wheels - can you tell me where you bought yours?

Also, how did your wheels get nicked? What sort of skewers did you have? I use the sets that need a 5 sided [strike]hex[/strike] [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trans-X-Security-Quick-Release-Skewer/dp/B000XD019E"]pent key[/ame] - I know the keys are pretty pervasive, but my thinking is that it cuts down the odds of the scrote having the right tools...

  • not sure if those security quick release skewers have strong enough grip for fixed gear. there are special security nuts available though from good ironmongers stores.

Ah yeah, I knew that, er... so... fixed gear bikes need stronger grip skewers than regular skewers?

Taken from bike rack outside my flat, behind electric gate in small block. Would love to know exactly what happened, as it's pretty secure spot. Worst part is my bike was the only one touched out of a dozen bikes.

I just use standard nuts, came with wheelset. But use kryptonite D-lock +flex cable now and always secure the wheels. Had only locked the frame up before.

  • Hi, I was wondering how you are getting on with the dp18 wheel set? How do they compare to the mach1's? I'm also in the middle of a new build and considering either of those. From research the differences are:

    Mach1 rim - 490g and 25mm depth
    http://www.mailorderbikes.com/m5b591s312p7495/RALEIGH_Mach1_Rim_700C_Omega_32H_White_/RS_GB

    Dp18 rim - 590g with 40mm
    http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/RIRIDP18/rigida_dp18_rim

Then obviously the whatever weight of the hubs/ spokes/ tyres on top of each wheel.*

    What are your thoughts? Cheers*
