pretty keen to be part of this, but would (probably) be my first lfg ride.
Sounds like a pretty quick pace though. If I can solo oxford and back from sw6 in circa 3 hours each way will I be able to keep up?
If I have "expert user" under mathcad and excel on my CV can I keep up (even if I fib just a little bit) with the conversation? -

^ so that must be averaging about 20mph over 120 miles? Think you may have trouble riding slow enough to keep back with us. As for the mathematics, i only have an o-level

There have been murmurings from the ranks of possibly doing a faster and slower ride out (Coinciding to arrive around the same time), with only the fast group riding the return leg.
Any thoughts?

That sounds a good idea. Skully mentioned it to me.
How much earlier would the slower people need to set out to arrive at the same time?
Or would the fast people go a circuitous route and if so how many additional miles? -
• #83
The slower group:
Circa 4 - 4.25 hours including stops
Sociably paced 15 average with "comfort breaks" if/when required.
No one will be dropped.
If you like a nice ride with good company and the occasional chat this is the one for you.The fast group:
Sub 3 hours
6pt reckons he could do it 19-20mph average solo so we'll be looking to improve on that as a group. I will also endeavour to teach him that his choice of unit is inferior.
People doing the fast ride one way will be frowned upon (unless they happen to carry on for a solo century warm down). If in doubt, opt for the former.

The fast group is already doing double the distance. -

The fast group is already doing double the distance.
True but
(Coinciding to arrive around the same time),
How is this happy coincidence engineered?
-
• #86
The fast group will be stopping once. At the destination.
-
• #87
And setting off later.

In the maths theme;
Two groups (A & B) have the same start point.
They set off in the same direction.
A is traveling at 15mph with a break of 5 minutes every hour.
B is travelling at 20mph with out pauses. How much time must pass between A and B departures, to allow B to catch A after X?
Caveats:
1] Where X is equal to the exact distance of route yet to be committed topaperprintpixels.
2] Assuming that there are no unexpected stoppages for either A or B -

well I'm defo up for the slow ride. don't think i could manage ©20mph over 100km, especially on fixed and if i did the return leg i would probably end up averaging about 12mph!

2] Assuming that there are no unexpected stoppages for either A or BWell, if A is travelling at 15mph + 5 minutes stoppage/hr that means that the average speed should actually be 13.75mph and should complete the distance in about 4 hours and 20 minutes. Group be averaging a solid 20mph should make it in about 3 hours flat, so I guess 80 minutes difference should be enough to ensure both groups arrive simultaneously.

Call it an hour and my lot can have ten minutes allowed rest and a little bit for the unknown.
No wee stops (clock's ticking). -
• #96
See, this practically organises itself.
8.30 start time for the slower group.
9.30 for the Roadie scum. -
• #97
A fast forum ride? I don't believe it! Look forward to being dropped riding fixed.
-
• #98
I'll probably plump for the leisurely group. While I can often average in excess of 20mph my speed tends to drop off a lot when I reach the bottom of the hill.
-
• #99
What's the return pace gonna be?
-
• #100
Depends on wind direction and people. Nobody will get left behind, I imagine, so it'll be as fast as the slowest person tagging along.
But the front may well be continuing as before.
