I forget to ask; I assumed there's no pub stop halfway right?
-
• #132
Nightmare...
Just checked my pannier rack and it turns out that I've lost the screws for the rear dropouts.
Would any kind samaritan happen to have appropriate screws or even, at a stretch, a spare pannier rack that I could purloin for the weekend?

I forget to ask; I assumed there's no pub stop halfway right?
This is a good question. I'd have thought a two stop strategy would be best for a ride of this distance.
I know a good cafe about 5 miles this side of Farnham, but that's perhaps a bit early to be stopping.
-
• #134
I have the necessary bolt for the panniers on my bike, I reckon it's long enough for you to use, is it on the drop out or seat stay?
-
• #135
Brilliant! It's on the drop out.
-
• #136
I am currently carbo loading via a cheeky early easter egg, see you all tomorrow!
-
• #137
Unfortunately I was unable to find a front brake that fits (the one I had on my steel frame does not fit my new carbon fork, the screw is too short) and didn't get a chance to get down to a bike shop before closing time.
I will keep away from everyone on the big downhills so no need to worry, I won't cause an accident.
I have not had any accidents as an adult on a bicycle yet so fingers crossed I won't have any tomorrow.Spybot - would be great to have the company of another fixed rider, but best you ride whatever you are most comfortable with I guess.
See you all in the morning.

This is probably too late but there's currently a spare front brake, with cable and outer, sitting on the kitchen table at casa del six point/spybot that I would be happy for you to borrow if Oli feels like taking it along in the morning. If he reads this and is feeling generous. Also got some spare bars with levers on lying around but I think asking Oli to take that along is a step too far.
-
• #139
6pt - thanks a lot for the offer.
No need for the bars or lever, so please do not bother anyone with that.
Front brake would be great but the screw would need to be long enough to fit the carbon fork.
I have a lever that I will bring along in case Oli does bring the brake.
If it does not fit I'll carry it in my back pack so it does not weigh anyone down. Thanks again!!

still rather pissed off I can't be with you on this one guys. hope It's a good one.
ed, sorry to hear about your accident, hope its not too painful.
-
• #141
Thanks ed, but I've done that distance fixed before, and a bit more, so I'm not worried about that.
I was basically asking what other people are riding.
Apologise, didn't understood that.

• #142
Out. I've not been well recently but hoped I'd be able to make it happen. Sadly not.
-
• #143
I'll be there just past 8. I missed my train by about 9 seconds.
-
• #144
Brilliant ride. I arrived home last night with the immense feeling of satisfaction that only comes from an all over feeling of soreness! Many thanks to Sam for being an excellent leader.
-
• #145
Yeah, cheers sam for getting us there in daylight! For the record I also made the train at st pancras . Hopefully I will never be so close to seeing someone wiped out by a dear again...
-
• #146
We only just made it in daylight...
I wouldn't hold your breath on the prospects of avoiding deer smashy smashy. This is the third ride I've been on where there's been a close call, and that's without counting dogs, foxes, badgers...and squirrels.
After a bit of a stop-start first half, riding through the new forest in the sun was fantastic. Roads were smooth and quiet, that was top riding, and a great end to a really pleasant route - so big thanks to Sam and the other gramonators for pointing us around. Further plaudits to braker for riding with a fucked back with good grace and humour.
Would also be great if Bournemouth could put a couple more of these on their signs:
squabs, did you take some pictures? Will you upload?

An eventful day!
A slightly disjointed first half with blocked roads, punctures et al, but a nice and cohesive second half. Sorry we had to lose Raymond at Alton, but it was a sterling effort to make it over so many hills on that ratio! And a shame to see Clubman take the rest of the ride solo - I think the second half would have suited your needs better.
Very happy that my back held out. Pain-cave became rape-shed on more than one of those hills.... and I hope the yo-yo of the group on said climbs wasn't too frustrating for the mountain goats.
Special mention to all those who did it with one gear, and the heroic deed of riding those descents fixed and brakless - That sort of feat would have destroyed most riders. Also mad props to hairnetic for blitzing most of us on the hills with what I was later to learn were flat pedals!... Mental.
All in all, nice company, sweet lanes, and some good laughs. Cheers.

Sam I think that was Sid (forum name?) on the Colnago with platform pedals.

^^^ Ha! so true about the lack of station signs, Spybot,
I really was miffed at having to do a Bournemouth A-road alleycat after such a lengthy journey, only to miss my pre-paid return train by 3 mins.
Thank-you to the three others who groupsaved and minimized my additional spend to £22.85.Quite a coup to get twelve of us onto a train with only three available bike spaces.
That said, it had been a great day out and that ride just seemed to get better the further we went: after Alton there were some spanking cycling lanes leading to the lofty openess of the New Forest and swweping descents to sunset over the sea at Christchurch.
Really enjoyed the company of some of the regulars and was pleased to meet each of the 'newbies' I've not ridden with before. Thank-you Sam for getting the show on the road and to you and /rod Munch for near faultless navigation.
A few gear incheh less, Raymund and you'd have been with us all the way to the beach.
A lasting memory of deer and brakeless steeds vaulting bushes. And New Forest ponies slipping on banana skins

wow, sounds like a great and eventfull day. now i'm really pissed off at having to miss out.
I still think the list is a bit wrong - about four others went missing at the same time as Clubman and aren't back in yet, and some others got re-added.
I'll take a punt on this (please forgive me if it's wrong!)...
