fixed is perfectly doable, with a decent cadence, water, rest etc. there's no reason for fixed to be harder than geared, in fact I find myself preferring fixed on long distance than geared.
A long ride will be hard if you push yourself.
If I had the Brooklyn, I'd definitely be taking that, it was perfect on the Dunwich Dynamo.
