Riding fixed on a 48/17, no brake...
Riding distance in a group is a sociable experience. Riding brakeless in a group is not, and I can think of one descent that would be downright unpleasant.
Don't be a liability./not on the ride, my opinion is worth nothing.

For those not sure about riding fixed, I had not been on a bike since mid August until almost a month ago but been getting a few miles on my new ride and I don't wana miss out on this ride so I'm comming allong.
Riding fixed on a 48/17, no brake.....worst that will happen is a few days of pain afterwards but I'm excited about the ride.
I did loads of miles over the summer but never that far fixed.
Poots you should come allong, you wont do worst than me!Re train tickets, when I get mine first class was a few quid cheaper than a regular ticket : ) and didnt cost that much!
Glat to hear the ride in on despite the weather.
Not that i'm doubting your skilz, but riding brakless down some of the descents on this route is best reserved for the brave and foolish...
Few conflicting weather reports out there, but be prepared for a possible shower or two and a bit of wind chill. The wind should be in our favour, which will make a big difference in certain sections.

48/17 with no brake = insane.
-
• #107
74 GI brakless is not insane, though definitely not desirable for a hundred miles.

Guys I appreciate the advise, I have actually been meaning to go get a brake put on, its a new bike and sice I had it built I have had no time at all to get it.
Didnt actually realise the grades were so steep, I figured I would just have to slow my feet down as much as I could on the downhills, but if they are too steep + fatigue, it may not be pleasent....I will try to get my hands on a front brake.
I don't wana be a liability so if still no brake by Saturday I will just leave a big gap between myself and the rest of the group on the downhills, but I will try get a brake put on by then.

No discrimination round these parts, but i'll be keeping my distance on any sketchy sections :)
-
• #110
I've ridden with people who installed BrakeLess on their bicycle, any they were fine but that was on ride were grades are decent (such as the DD, the Deepest Darkest Essex, London to Brighton etc.).
It's just 74GI, Braklessness, and those grades is no me gusta.

Bit of a noob here - no prior experience on LFGSS rides - thinking of tagging along for most of the journey (peeling off to a different final destination come the New Forest).
Is there any kind of humiliating LFGSS 100 Club initiation ceremony which I should know about beforehands?

Just make sure you use plenty of chammy cream. Braker will give you a hand applying it, if you ask nicely.

We may ask you to 'do a crash' a la Stonehenge but that's probably it

I have noticed that I'd been deleted from the list. That wasn't because I'd changed my mind - I'm still intending to come, so Ive put myself back again.
It might be good to have the run leader's mobile phone no. available.
It's only too easy to get separated and lost, and no fun for the rest of the group to hang about for ages waiting for some one to catch up when they are on a completely different road.Puncturing on the way to Richmond is another possibility.
My no. is: 0796 3636 784, but I'm not leading.
I agree with Ed and the others above. Attempting this trip without brakes doesn't make any sense. It would put other members of the group at risk, but also would make for so much extra work for the brakeless rider. It's hard enough to have to push to go faster, pushing to go slower is just something you can do without.
A junior member of a pro team who failed to finish a race and offered a puncture as an excuse was once told by his cruel *directeur sportif *"Only tired riders puncture!"
I don't think this is true, but I do think tired riders are more prone to crashing. I've seen it happen so many times, and had some of my own back rims smashed to pieces. But, up to now anyway, the riders who caused the trouble did at least have brakes.

With you on that clubman. I'll do the same that I did with the Bristol ride a couple of weeks ago and PM those on the list my number tomorrow.

Having just taken my fixed wheel bike out, and managed to get the bike ridiculously comfortable for a track frame (wide rims + 25c + 75psi = perfection), my ribs still cause nagging pain so I'll be changing the bike for the CX with 33.3c tyres, pain bearable with that one.
Shame really but if I got sharp pain on the ribs while rising a measily 10 miles commute, 120 miles will be a burden rather than an enjoyment.
-
• #119
pain in the ribs. did you take. a spill?
-
• #120
Hit by a car two weeks ago and got a fracture ribs.
Track frame and skinny 25c tyres on normal wheel does not helped whatsoever.

1 brakless and 1 ribless...
Was thinking of coming with gears to notch up a maiden geared ton, but if most are going fixed I'll do that. Or if there are 'fixed brethren' who want/need company of another single gear.
Even if I'm geared I'm not gonna be leaping off the front or anything. Unless I need to move it to get to the station for my train...
-
• #123
fixed is perfectly doable, with a decent cadence, water, rest etc. there's no reason for fixed to be harder than geared, in fact I find myself preferring fixed on long distance than geared.
A long ride will be hard if you push yourself.
If I had the Brooklyn, I'd definitely be taking that, it was perfect on the Dunwich Dynamo.
-
• #124
Thanks ed, but I've done that distance fixed before, and a bit more, so I'm not worried about that.
I was basically asking what other people are riding.
