I think we got crossed wires. What I was pointing out is that doing all the shaping at the end of the down tube to mate round the bottom bracket shell seems like a lot of work and that there is no butting of the end tube against the BB shell to spread load.
If you imagined that the end of the down tube was round and fitted flat to a ring around the post you have coming from the BB that it would be cleaner and help spread some of the load. The extra long 'stump' is definitely a good move.
