Cool story indeed, however, I doubt its accuracy as upon descending into the boat they would no doubt be engaging in hand to hand, close quarters fighting and the lack of depth perception caused by only using one eye would be a major and potentially fatal handicap.

I think he meant descending into their own ship. I can see it being of use as it would be pretty bloody dark below deck, even with candles.
