Maybe we should have a fight about it?

Wicksie - Apologies for not getting back to you, I've been bogged down with work for bullshit modules this week, I'll reply to your message ASAP

Here's the prototype the metal workers have done for us. I've tried to make it fairly universal.
It's 3mm steel atm. It's very very stiff, but a touch on the heavy side.
They said 3mm alloy is fine but going thicker than that will cost more. 2mm steel is fine too.We could prob make the holes slightly larger, but I thought it would be better to start too big and cut down than the reverse.
I'm getting someone in brum to test them for improvements and will start work on a front one. -

sweet, i need a front one!

me too!

I've just ordered a pair from Max Power, will post pix up when they arrive...

Drunken late night bash guard purchases?
We've all been there.

What are disc rotors made from, anyone know? -

Steel. I have a 3mm and it's heavy. A machined alu guard would be good but would have to be pretty thick. 5mm at the least I'd imagine...

I was sober...

So, who can machine this for me in 5mm alu pref T6 6061?

Do you have that in a drawing file, such as a .dxf? Or an annotated eng drawing so I can make a decent drawing of it? Then I can price it.
Also need to know numbers, the setup/tooling/program the cnc takes a notable amount of time, so the price for 10 will only be material+machine time more than the price for 1 (setup time + machine time + labour to draw the thing), if you get my drift.Material isn't a bother, its been ages now and the pile of alu we had has been used up and remainder scrapped I'm afraid. We do have a decent stock of 2.5/3.0mm stainless which is already paid for, so would be a bit less than list I guess if you think its any good vs. 5mm plate alu

As I said on PM. I just want one made up at this stage to see if it works. Unless there's enough people to trust my sketches...
Or indeed unless Moog can 3D Print one to see if it does work.Again, stainless steel is no good, this really needs to be 5mm Alu, preferably T6 6061.
So I guess we need someone a little less professional? Thanks Brickman, offer appreciated.
I do have an autocad file if anyone needs but can't upload it.
This is a drawing file, open it in illustrator and export to .dfx / .dwg if poss. -

just email the file, gmail or whatever won't care what file format it is ;)
3D print, we have a pair of additive layer plastics printers (ABS and other types of plastic, though ABS is the most resilient) for a 'proove it fits' kind of job ;)
IF you have the drawing file we can convert it to gcodes and get one printed in an afternoon for you. Material is about £35/kg, and your prob looking at 100-200g of material for what I've seen, so could prob get you one printed and posted to you for whatever it uses in plastic -

Wouldn't thick abs work anyway?!
I'd pay £7 to try it!
-
• #92
Ooh, 3d printing could be fun, I'll get our 3d printy guy to play with them.
-
• #93
Still not sure it will fit on other bikes though. Perhaps someone would like to print it on card and see?
-
• #94
I'll make him draw up one that'd fit my bike. He likes doing that kind of thing.

3D printing wouldn't be viable for me to do, laser cutting from acrylic could be done but the school laser cutter desperately needs a service/new laser so is out of action at the moment.
Wicksie - sorry I haven't been in contact, school work has got stupidly busy for me right now. thanks for the message with all the information, I won't be able to do much until July though. sorry

I don't play polo, but my old man used to be a toolmaker.
Can't you make a sample by hand, to see if it works ? then if it does, look into making pretty CNC ones ?
-
• #97
Yes we would definitely trial the template before making a load.
I won't be able to do much until July though. sorry
Ha, I won't be here then matey...

At some point I am going to dremel some alu, just ain't happened yet.

^this
it's really not that hard to source a bit of aluminium and hand make a simple prototype to see if it works

^That's what I've been doing. Final prototype should be ready by tomorrow, pics to follow.
I said I'd draw one if someone gave me a photo.
