I suspect nothing would have survived what ever killed that, except perhaps super marathon ultra kevlarge anti stabs or what ever they are called. I have run gators for 18 months no flats and i am a fat bastard. bonty hard case before that...specialized infinities before that. I like the feel of the gators.

I've had similar in my last 3 gatorskins and have finally given up on them.
like fatoldbloke said, whatever caused it would probably have gotten through any tyre. Tyres get ruined, it happens, it sucks but it happens -
• #12
Surprised no one mentioned how worn that tyre look.
You had a year out of them, as other have said, that seemed about normal for a decent tyres.

• #13
is it a front or rear?

Thanks for the replies.
Agreed, it's had a good innings and whatever caused it would probably have killed anything.
Off to my LBS to talk about some of the recommendations.
Cheers all.
It was the rear by the way, and I was doing teh skidz over glass when it happens

Yep.
I've done 1600 miles on my GP4000s and they are fine. Whatever cut that would fuck up any tyre.

Ended up with a Bontrager Hard Case on there now as that's all that they had. Looks pretty tough.
-
• #17
They are, tough and grippy, wear out rather quickly thought.

the EXACT same thing happened to me! square cm piece of glass. put a tube patch and some silver duct tape on the inside and continued using it though

Well there you go. Heavily worn tyre, skidz over glass. What did you expect?
Even without the glass, its time was coming.

Ghetto tyre repair!

Exactly the same happened to me pulling away from a junction just after I'd had to emergency brake cos of some nugget pulling in front of me to block a gap, I still dont know what caused it, I just had to assume that they go off and perish after a year until somebody set me straight that they dont go off. Weird! Still like them, might try the hardshells next.

tyres getting cuts? who would have thought it?
Pulled away from a junction this evening and had an almost instant blow out. Was in a rush so just walked about a mile home. Just checked it now and it's completely cut through and has had it. Wonder what could have caused it as I thought these are supposed to be pretty tough - isn't there a layer of kevlar in there? Having second thoughts about instantly replacing it with another, although it's the first puncture I've had in over a year with this tyre - just wasn't expecting it to fail so spectacularly.
