Freecoasters!

  • I have been riding a freecoaster on the BMX, off and on now for a while. I have since made a thrust bearing modification.

    Anyone else tried any customisations?

  • I loved my freecoaster. I didn't make any amazing customisations to it though, just kept the thing rolling by replacing busted driver bearings and trying whichever technique KHE had put out that week to stop it happening.

I did turn an old pleg into a grind guard, which when coupled with a gland ment that you couldn't get near the hubshell. This was learnt through experience as the one I had before was so beat up you couldn't remove the non drive side bearing and therefore couldn't service it fully.

    Which coaster have you got?
Any reason for the thrust bearing modification?

If you haven't already check out the modifications Rob Ridge made to his.

  • Thats cool. I bought a complete KHE Astern wheel off eBay for £37. Got instanly hooked. Had bearing issues a month after using it solidly so stripped it out and thought it was awesome inside. My mate had a couple of broken coasters (a Federal and a Reverse) so i took them off his hands and started a project!

I paint stripped and polished the KHE Reverse hubshell and got a mate from work to laithe the inside of the axle down slightly replace the alloy spacer behind te clutch with a thrust bearing mod. This allows for crank flips whilst rolling in fakie, with a much lower chance of engaging the clutch into the hub. I also swapped the anodised blue collar spacer from the Astern.

Looks great. Just need a rim to build it all up now. Will post a picture soon.

  • Awesome. I bet the Reverse was a bitch to polish with it's silly ridges. I haven't heard of anyone adding the thrust bearing to a KHE hub.

They used to come stock on the Poverty coasters and were a common modification to Odyssey Reloaders so I understood how they made backpedalling slightly smoother, but it was never something I felt my Reverse was missing.

Naively I didn't think people still did crankflips, I've been out of the bmx game for 2 years now and I almost never saw them then, though I felt like I was the only person still doing x-up tricks so maybe my local scene just can't handle the tried and true tricks of the past.
