Garmin 800. Just got given one. Embrace me, Garminites.
Garmin make lots of things more painful than necessary in order to make money from map sales. If they didn't sell maps the whole process would be a piece of piss [edit]
Pros.
A handy piece of kit for following routes
Really decent bracket that holds the garmin in place clear readable "front" display showing mph/miles covered/time
Battery lasts for probably 10+ hours (i've only used it for 6)
Cons
Expensive
Clunky software (for uploading your routes) - Garmin "connect" is painful
Uploading maps is far from intuitive (see above)
Not very firefox/mac friendly
[Unknown if it works better on PC/iexplorer browser]
Tips: Have someone show you how to use it - trust me on this.
Be clear if you are using it as a heart rate/cadence tool or mapping tool and it might help if you compare a couple of the map options before downloading/purchasing
Purchase a couple of mini-SD cards.
Ride in a group with someone who has one to work out if you need one.
If Garmin don't make their online interface easier I'm sure one of the non-gps makers (like a mobile company) will eat their lunch in a couple of years.
You don't need a garmin to embrace Hippy, but it might help.
