• I have just changed to 144bcd and my new bike comes with a 48T Sugino ZEN chainring.

I would like to get 49T and 50T, although I think I'll mostly be using the 48T, so was happy to pay a bit extra for that.

However, I might well want 49T and 50T too, but don't want to break the bank (already broken, sadly...!). I've read a bit about some makes really not being up to scratch - not sufficiently round, not properly centred, etc.

I see that Miche, Token, Genetic, Stronglight, TA and others all make decent "looking" chainring for something between £25 and £50. Can anyone recommend one that's going to be good?

In fact are the Sugino 75 and Sugino really that much better (and worth saving up for)?

Alternatively, does anyone have a really good (quality and condition) used 49T/50T that they're willing to part with for an appropriate fee?

    Thanks

    Jobs.

  • Hey JBSWRTHY, After some pondering research I chose the sugino messenger RD2 as much for the the*** all black*** colour as the sturdy build quality/rep (oh and street cred....: ) none of the other manufacture's you mentioned provided me with the colour combo I was after. But would have all been in the running. maybe add Brev/Campagnalo to your list of poss. hope this helps.

  • Thanks for your input, bobo26.
To be honest, I'm not especially interested in colour-coordination/street-cred. The chainring is for track racing and I'm mainly interested in it being of sufficiently good quality/build.

  • Ebay is your freind.
I got a 49t FSA chainring brand new off ebay for £15. They retail at £75ish normally. Second hand Zen/75 chainrings in garish colours can often be had for cheap if you're not bothered about looks.
Where are you racing? Bunch races or specialist stuff like sprints & pursuits? FWIW, I barley ever change my 49t for racing at HH.... changing sprockets is much easier, quicker and cheaper. I find a 48t & 49t chainring, and 13,14 & 15t sprockets are more than enough for most types of racing at HH.

    Personal preference though, innit.

  • Gebhardt from Sonic Cycles are a bit rough round the edges finish wise but very round and value for money @ no more than £35

  • I Geb<3.

  • ^ Dubtap knows all about the garish colour chainring bargains....

  • I only have a 47t that's gathering dust though.

47x14 is so hot right now.

  • 88"... Nice.
    The gear of champions.

  • ^^it's 90" in trackspeak. I thought you were Mr. Track?

  • It's 88 on my set up!
And I'm Mr. Awesome... Not Mr. Track.

Jeez.... I thought you knew everything.

  • It's 88.3" on mine, but I'd still call it 90" in a track context. FFS, we've been through all this before. Trackspeak = 27" wheels.

  • Balls to that old boy shit.

  • Fucking noob^.

  • discrace, innit.

  • Well, you'd better spell things out to your teammates in any team event on the track, or you could fuck it up for everyone.

  • I'd hardly call me Dov & Jay a team...
I like to think of us as more of a wolfpack.

  • Gebhardt or Goldtec for Sug 75s, would we say?
