27 x 1.1/4 rim too small for tire

Posted on
  • I have been given an old wheel that want to use on an old frame. The rim is a mavic, red and green label and marked 27 x 1 1/4

I bought a Michelin world tour tire and assembled. The tube pushed the tire off and the tube started to escape.

An beaten up Continetal was tried with the same effect.

The rim diameter is 4 -5mm smaller diameter when compared with 2 other 27 inch wheels.

I think the rim is too small, why would I have rim that is a few mm smaller that standard ?

  • It does have a rim? I mean It's not a sprint is it?

  • were the tyres definitely 27 1/4?
I have an unused Gatorskin Hardshell in 27 1x1/4 if you're interested.

  • 27" is the biggest commonly available wheel size and the largest you can get michelin world tours in.

4-5mm makes it sound like a 700c or may it is a sprint rim like previously mentioned.

  • yup 4-5mm difference is 700c

One is 630mm in one diamention, the other is 622mm, so sound slike the label was just stuck on the rim to make it look pretty, regarrdless of it being the wrong one.

  • I ran 700x23c's on a 27x1 1/4 rim, infact I gave the back to a mate, still going strong, with suicide cog to ;)

    Danger say whaaaaaat?

  • Ask edscoble. Easy.

What was the bead made of?

I destroyed some wire bead tyres trying to get them onto a 27" rim. The wire literally got torn out!
