Well actually it did, more so than anyone couldve imagined. Do you remember those cheesy VR based tv gameshows? the graphics were horrendous. For the past 10 years at least everyone has been able to have a console/PC with superb 3d graphics and the ability to even play with millions of people worldwide in a VIRTUAL REALITY. They just dropped the term.
Even crappy old gameboy DS's have full online game play built in. Mario karts is better VR than anyone of those 90's tomorrows world examples or the cheesy gameshows.
