Shimano BR 6200 Servicing

  • Can someone point me in the right direction regarding servicing the above brake set (600 EX Arabesque 1982)?

They're side pull which are a bitch but they're particularly friction-y after a spring clean I'd like to get them sorted.

  • I have a pair here, and they are just pretty standard single pull brakes. There are no wear parts as such.
Dismantle the shaft out of the centre of them, noting the order (and condition) of the washers/spacers/spring/clip/arms etc.
Wipe everything down, and inspect for wear. If there is any, it'll be on the shaft/bolt, or in the hole/bush within each arm (2x) or at the back/front contact surface of each arm (will make more sense when you pull them apart).
All the other parts (brake adjuster etc), just dismantle and soak in WD40/plus gas to clean them out + ensure they don't seize in future.

Its unlikely there is any wear, if there is, pretty much all you can do is place a larger (thin) washer at the front & back of each contact surface of the offending arm and hope that takes the slack out of the brake. Rebuild with a decent synthetic lightweight grease, then wipe off any excess (brakes attract the dirt like magnets).

  • thanks brickie as you said i managed to completely take the thing apart but I've got a small issue withscrewing the bugger back on. It seems the front is double treaded, one thread for the boss and another to hold the calliper/spring/capliper mesh together. When screwing in I find that other I get too far into th boss and not far enough into the mechanism or vice versa.

Maybe a video will help explain... hmmm...
