I'm not sure about the benefits of stripping a saddle. I did strip an SLR in the past but I found it rather 'solid'
Recently, I contacted Charge to register my disdain at the stitching that runs atop the Spoon and Knife saddles. The Spoon is a real favourite of mine but I have also found that the stitching will devour clothing, showing a particular fondness for Assos winter tights. If I wasn't so precious I wouldn't mind, but but I am, so I do.
So anyway, I was drawn to the Spoon because it shares a similar profile to the original, and very comfy Selle Italia Flite. I suspect this was no
mistake and rightly so as it seems to fit most people most of the
time. The Spoon is close to being the perfect perch save for that damn
stitching.
I asked if there any plans to issue the Spoon sans the offending
embroidery? Just a totally smooth saddle, in leather with titanium
rails in various colour options.
I rather thought this would be a winner but, no.
The kind man at Charge was quick to reply;
''*Hi,
Sorry to hear about the chaffing. We run this theme on our other saddles too such as the Knife and Pan. To date we have only had a few people with the same experience as you (one on Singletrack forum the other day). This is normally made worse by the grit in mud at this time of year which would cause issues with smooth saddles too.* *
The stitching does many things, provide grip in the wet/ sweat, allow the top section to be stretchy yet comfortable by providing support at the sides and making it flex uniformly, and lastly to add a bit of style.* *
The outer stitching is purely aesthetic and you could try removing it to prevent the chaff, the real stitching is inside and will not come undone.* *
I'm sorry to hear about your experiences and it I hope you don't get rid of them all yet.* *
Regards,* ''
I do like my Charge Ti Spoon, but I would love one with no stitching.
Using Aliante's now. They are great but no leather which wears so well, not a fan of Microtex.
