And I'm also not too sure that cripple is unacceptable. It's still used to describe roads and their blockages etc. maybe you just can't refer to people as cripples.
Yeah, crippling or being crippled is not offensive. It's tagging people as 'a cripple' which is offensive.
I've met quite a few people with mobility difficulties who referred to themselves as 'cripples' or 'crippled', for a variety of different purposes--some to shock, some to offset how they felt, some to forestall discrimination--, but I've also met lots of people who considered the word deeply offensive. The smart advice is to avoid the word.
