Big glass jar with industrial solvent in it. Used to use petrol, but it gunges up too quickly and an environmental disaster waiting to happen (solvent just evaporates leaving a neat gunge in the bottom of the jar which I change maybe once a year).
I store all my out of use chains in it (mtb has 3 in rotation etc), when needed, fish them out, allow to dry on newspaper, then a quick spray with muckoff easily removes anything thats left on them. Road bikes get teflon 'dry' lube, mtbs get 'wet' lube from finish line, there are better lubes, but I have piles of it for free from a bike shop flood damage pile.
