that's BS, they're fine, not for CX for sure, but fine
come one, most of the low- and mid-end MTBs' wheelsets are laced to Shimano hubs which are all lose bearings as well, and i don't hear masses of MTBers complain about it

Bearings can have seals without being cartridge bearings.
