• You can't always swap axles on hub gears - they often have parts that are pressed onto the axle, or keyways machined into them - so if there's only one length of axle made for them, then that's the only axle you can use.

    An AW or SRF3 (the massively improved modern equivalent) will give a reasonable gear range. I had mine set up to give (from memory) 35", 50" and 67" which was fine for the 10% hills in the Purbecks (I didn't ever need to get out of the saddle). 50" was direct drive and no less efficient than a singlespeed.
