Berlin to Copenhagen

  • Hi, a friend of mine and I are looking into cycling from Berlin to Copenhagen next summer, supposedly there is a marked cycle route between the two.

Has anyone here ever done any of it, or know anything about it?

  • I was thinking of doing this, among the many other cycle holidays I want to take next year but I'm afraid I've done absolutely no research.

Berlin and Copenhagen are awesome cities.

  • Thanks guys I have looked at these already, but cant find much information else where,
is there any other good cycling journeys in from berlin, or cologne?

  • I'm moving to Germany next week and we're only a few kilometres from the Berlin to Copenhagen path, I've ssen the signs, all the local paths link up to it. We're staying temporarily in the same holiday flat as stayed last time, they had loads of bike-route maps there, and definitely saw the route marked on them too...will check when I get there.

  • I'm also interested in doing this in the summer, it would be great to hear from anyone who's actually done it...

  • There will be a Amsterdam - Copenhagen trip in May,
not sure how many places will be available but Iil post once announced.
It's good to have some international riders! Amsterdam - Paris was much fun!

  • I haven't actually done it, but I lived in Germany long time so I can say something about the sights you'll encounter. Brandenburg is basically flat farmland. It's quite nice for a ride, but you don't want to stay in there for too long because it can get quite boring. If you want to take an extra couple hourse you should make sure to ride through Potsdam, it's a beautiful city. I assume you'll be taking the ferry from Rostock, which is a port city where the people have funny accents. I don't know much more about it. If you don't want to take the ferry from Rostock and want to stay on the mainland, I suggest going a bit west to the coast of the north sea. Here you can see the Wadensee which is a pretty spectacular natural phenomenon. Doing this will cost you quite a bit of extra time, but I think the landscape is worth it. Don't forget! Copenhagen is extremely expensive. Moreso than London even.

  • Potsdam would be a bit of a detour, but I guess if I'm in Berlin already I could always get a train out there. Copenhagen is horribly expensive, I was there twice this summer but it's such an amazing place I'd be willing to spend that bit extra to stay there. Hopefully with a bike and a bit of local knowledge courtesy of some Danish friends I'll be able to avoid spunking all my money on smørrebrød and pastries....

  • I've just posted some pics of examples of the variable nature of German rural bike routes on BikesBerlin if it will help you decide which bike / tyres to use.

  • This would be awesome. Copenhagen can be reasonably cheap if you do your research. Obviously nothing like Berlin/Germany though.

  • I'm hoping to do this next year. Just beginning to look at putting a bike together for it.
I've got an 80s 531 touring/cross (canti mounts) frame with every braze on imaginable so I might have to use that, have you had any thought about tires? The surfaces look great, apart from 'some' rough stuff.
I might have to wait until July for the weather to improve, other option is the Easter holidays (I have the whole of April off. Work in a school, guys!)

I'm also wondering how much training I'll need to put in. I already cycle from Forest Hill to Marylebone twice a day (22 miles), but will have to start some long weekend rides I think. 50 miles a day seems easily doable though on flat, slick roads and allows for a relaxing evening/breakfast (planning to stay in B&B's/hostels.

  • @dglshrn

I've cycled on a lot of the bike paths since I've been out here this year (also on an old touring bike) I was running 28 Panracer Pasellas but decided to upgrade to 32s, to better cope with some of the rougher bike paths.

Last Easter the weather was lovely and I nearly did Berlin-Copenhagen myself, but decided to be lazy and look around the town as I'd just moved here and been working a lot. Next year I might take the chance though.

The roads are dead flat, but often windy. I'd say you wouldn't need to up your training too much, depending on the mileage you want to cover.

  • Would anybody be up for doing Berlin - Copenhagen this Summer? There is a small group of us going to attempt it, but the more the merrier if any stragglers want to join!

WHEN you guys suceed - the fixie-king.dk (Danish equivalent to lfgss) will arrange a warm welcome and maybe ride the last 50km to cph :-)

  • yeah, something I would be interested in doing

Any more info? Dates? Group size? Av. milage and speed? Camping along the way I presume? I was planning on cycling Cambridge>Stockholm at the beginning of August but would be tempted to cycle Cambridge>Berlin Berlin> Copenhagen for the sake of some company!

  • Sorry for the late reply, I just read this.
Haven't got any 'plans' as such, but just definitely intend to cycle it, preferably with company! Was thinking some time in July and maybe taking a week to ten days and yeah camping along the way.
Does that sound like the sort of thing anyone would want to help me organise?

  • I did a significant chunk of this yesterday.....160k betwen Waren and Rostock......of the few cyclists we saw was one guy struggling (as were we) on a very sandy section coming in the other direction on a skinny tyred blue fixed with panniers....anyone from here?

    my thoughts:
